स्वर्णकार जाति का इतिहास

सोनार या स्वर्णकार – भारत और नेपाल के स्वर्णकार समाज से सम्बन्धित जाति है जिनका मुख्य व्यवसाय स्वर्णधातु से भाँति-भाँति के कलात्मक आभूषण बनाना है। यद्यपि यह समाज मुख्य रूप से हिन्दू धर्म को मानने वाला है लेकिन इसके कुछ सदस्य सिक्ख भी हैं जो हरियाणा और पंजाब में पाये जाते हैं। मूलत: ये सभी क्षत्रिय वर्ण में आते हैं इसलिये ये क्षत्रिय स्वर्णकार भी कहलाते हैं।आज भी ये अपने आप को मैढ़ राजपूत या मैढ़ क्षत्रिय कहने में गर्व महसूस करते है।

स्वर्णकार शब्द की व्युत्पत्ति

सुनार शब्द मूलत: संस्कृत भाषा के स्वर्णकार का अपभ्रंश है जिसका अर्थ है स्वर्ण अथवा सोने की धातु का काम करने वाला। प्रारम्भ में निश्चित ही इस प्रकार की निर्माण कला के कुछ जानकार रहे होंगे जिन्हें वैदिक काल में स्वर्णकार कहा जाता होगा। बाद में पुश्त-दर-पुश्त यह काम करते हुए उनकी एक जाति ही बन गयी जो आम बोलचाल की भाषा में सुनार कहलायी। जैसे-जैसे युग बदला इस जाति के व्यवसाय को अन्य वर्ण के लोगों ने भी अपना लिया और वे भी सुनार हो गये।

जाति का इतिहास

लोकमानस में प्रचलित जनश्रुति के अनुसार सुनार जाति के बारे में एक पौराणिक कथा प्रचलित है कि त्रेता युग में परशुराम ने जब एक-एक करके क्षत्रियों का विनाश करना प्रारम्भ कर दिया तो दो राजपूत भाइयों को एक सारस्वत ब्राह्मण ने बचा लिया और कुछ समय के लिए दोनों को मैढ़ बता दिया जिनमें से एक ने स्वर्ण धातु से आभूषण बनाने का काम सीख लिया और सुनार बन गया और दूसरा भाई खतरे को भाँप कर खत्री बन गया और आपस में रोटी बेटी का सम्बन्ध भी न रखा ताकि किसी को यह बात कानों-कान पता लग सके कि दोनों ही क्षत्रिय हैं।आज इन्हें मैढ़ राजपूत के नाम से भी जाना जाता है क्योंकि ये वही राजपूत है जिन्होंने स्वर्ण आभूषणों का कार्य अपने पुश्तैनी धंधे के रूप में चुना है। लेकिन आगे चलकर गाँव में रहने वाले कुछ सुनारों ने भी आभूषण बनाने का पुश्तैनी धन्धा छोड़ दिया और वे खेती करने लगे।
